Flat Roof Window Condensation

Condensation builds when there s an excess of moisture in the air.

Over time this excess moisture can lead to the unseen decay in roof timbers and fixings. Condensation is more prevalent in new homes. The problem however usually isn t the roof window. Condensation can cause a number of problems within a building particularly interstitial condensation which can occur inside the roof s structure.

So the best way of preventing condensation is to reduce this amount of moisture. This means they are cooled considerably more than vertical windows and due to the fact that warm air rises condensation will form on the glass of a roof window before a vertical window in the same environment. Flat roofs and low slope roofs also face potentially serious condensation problems that can in turn lead to costly rot or mold damage in buildings. When there is a big temperature difference between the outdoors and indoors like during winter this can result in condensation on windows.

Reducing moisture can be achieved by completing actions such as using extractor fans when cooking drying clothes outside or in a tumble dryer or opening roof windows when possible. You may notice condensation on your rooflight window because warm air which holds more moisture tends to rise and then liquefy when it comes into contact with a cool surface. Condensation is usually more noticeable on roof windows and flat roof windows because warm moist air rises to the ceiling. Our photograph at left shows severe alligatoring on a nearly flat low slope roof that also was relying on tar and roof cement to try to stop parapet wall leaks.
